S A H T is proud to announce our new historical experience

Discovering the Champagne Campaign

Details of the Champagne Campaign also known as ‘The Second D-Day’ and ‘La Bataille de Provence’ in the annals of World War Two military history have lain dormant and almost forgotten for sixty-four years. Overshadowed by wartime events elsewhere, little is recalled of those sunny Azure Coast, Provencal days during late August 1944.

Dr. Steve Weiss, veteran of The Second D-Day and a Senior Research Fellow, War Studies at Kings College London will take us to the same battlefield where he fought on 64 years ago.     September 12 24, 2008

Easy Company Veteran for May Band of Brothers Group Confirmed:

William Wingett

We are pleased to announce that Bill Wingett will be joining us on our Band of Brothers tour this May. There are only 8 more spaces available for the tour so call the office today to register.

William Wingett was born in Spokane, Washington and raised in California. He followed a family tradition when he joined the army in August of 1942. His father was activated in the National Guard in 1939 and was sent into active duty after Pearl Harbor. His brother, Kenneth, joined the Merchant Marines at age 16 and went to the South Pacific. An older brother was injured in Italy, and another younger brother served in the 4th Infantry.

William went directly into the 101st as a paratrooper as a PFC and stayed with Easy Company throughout his tour of duty: from training in Toccoa, Geogia all the way to Berchtesgaden, Germany. A machine gunner for Easy Company, Wingett jumped into Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and was later wounded in Holland during Operation Market Garden. He reenlisted into the 82nd Airborne in 1946, where his younger brother Kenneth, who had reached enlistment age, joined him. They served together in the 82nd until 1948, when William returned to civilian life. He now lives in Salem, Oregon where he owns his own carpentry business.

Wingett served with Easy Company - the original "Band of Brothers"- during WWII, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his actions in the European theater.

The Beginning and The End of WWII: Germany and Poland

Berlin  •  Seelow Heights  •  The Wolf’s Lair (Ketrzyn) •  Gdansk  •  Grunwald  •  Warsaw   •  Krakow  •  Auschwitz  •  Treblinka

The trip will begin in Berlin where we will spend a couple of days visiting remaining historic sites from the war, as well as follow the course of the battle for the city from its outskirts to the steps of the Reichstag itself. There we will even see graffiti left by Red Army soldiers. From the capital of the Reich, we will move on to the Seelow Heights to visit the remains of the final battle of the war on the Eastern Front.

Moving on into Poland, we will visit Gdansk, where the opening shots of the war were fired and where, decades later, Solidarity would begin a series of strikes that would eventually lead to the downfall of the communist regime. Next we will stop to see what remains of Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair, which was the Fuhrer’s headquarters for much of the war on the Eastern Front and the location of the June 1944 attempt on his life. We also plan on visiting the site of the Battle of Tannenberg (Grunwald) and the castle that was the home of the Teutonic Order; the Medieval Knightly order that was the inspiration for much of Heinrich Himmler’s SS rituals.

Outside Warsaw, we will visit foxholes and other fortifications that survive from the battles fought around the outskirts of the city.  We then move into Warsaw to see where the rising of 1944 was fought, as well as an earlier struggle by the residents of the Jewish Ghetto. While in Warsaw we will also see the Polish Military Museum, as well as other museums and memorials.

Once we have finished up in the city we will visit the infamous Auschwitz Concentration Camp near Krakow, as well as Stalag Luft III, where a group of Allied POWs carried out what came to be called the “Great Escape,” and much more.

As more details of the trip become available we will post them on our website, so be sure to check back periodically. It should be a wonderful and unique trip.  Please contact the office if you are interested in learning more about this tour, and once we have finalized our dates, prices and itinerary, we will send it to you.

Easy Company Hero and Friend, Paul R. Miller, passes away

Paul R. Miller, Sgt. Chief Surgical Technician of the Unit Headquarters Co. 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, passed away quietly in the early morning on May 23rd.  We were lucky to have him join our Band of Brothers tour in September of 2005 and listen to him regale the group with his wonderful and frightening stories of the war that only he knows.  We will all remember the contributions he has made, not only fighting for our country as a young man, but helping to preserve and forever remember the sacrifices our servicemen made.  It was an honor knowing Paul.  We will miss him, and our thoughts are with his family.
